Questa è la tecnica “madre” per chi vuole fare incisione. Intrecci di segni su una matrice di metallo (rame, zinco i più usati), trattata precedentemente con apposita vernice e affumicata. L’azione vera e propria di morsura sarà eseguita dall’acido usato (nitrico, percloruro di ferro), nel tipo, nella concentrazione e nel tempo scelti dall’incisore.
Spesso, nel passato, era usata come tecnica di traduzione in opera grafica delle opere più conosciute degli artisti famosi che, in questo modo, moltiplicavano le copie di una immagine per un mercato più diffuso e remunerativo. Gli incisori diventavano così dei semplici “traduttori”, bravissimi tecnici che lasciavano il merito dell’atto creativo al Maestro che non aveva tempo o voglia per questa pratica. Molti grandi artisti furono però anche grandi incisori: Dürer, Rembrant, Goya, Tiepolo.
L’acquaforte, occorre dirlo, è anche il regno assoluto del Bianco e Nero.

A mastery of etching is fundamental for those wishing to produce prints. It is carried out by incising a drawing onto a metal plate block (copper and zinc are the most frequently used metals) which has previously been treated with a special varnish and then smoked. Mordanting is performed by using an acid bath. The effect varies depending on the type of acid used (nitric acid, iron perchlorate), its concentration and the bite time chosen by the engraver.
This technique was often used in the past to graphically reproduce the works of well-known artists. It increased the number of available copies of an image in response to an expanding and remunerative market. Engravers became simple “translators” of art works despite being highly skilled technicians. They took no credit for the works they reproduced, leaving the limelight to the Grand Masters who had neither the time nor the desire to do the etchings themselves.
Many great artists, however, were also superb engravers: Durer, Rembrant, Goya, Tiepolo. It is important to note that the world of etching is a realm of light and shade. (Home page: etching by Ferruccio Bortoluzzi)
