Looking at the latest editions of the Venice Carnival, one would hope for a suspension. What this event has become is there for all to see. A great opportunity to show yourself, to spend, to earn… all very far from the spirit with which this event should be organized. We look at the numbers and not the quality of the events. Party for foreigners of all types: from those who disembark with the private “boat”, to those who sleep under the procuratie. A pause would allow a public administration worthy of the city’s importance to review the Carnival and return it to the city and its few surviving inhabitants. Those who only want to party should do it at home and come here with respect and devotion. Theaters open with ad hoc shows, shows distributed in the fields and squares. Already in the 1990s I published this etching, in which the traditional bautte were spectators of other people’s events and drinking.
